Retainer care: how long to wear and how to clean your retainer

Teeth naturally try to move back after orthodontic treatment. Your retainer keeps your new smile in place.

Wear schedule

  • Wear your retainer exactly as instructed. Many people wear it full-time at first, then nightly, often long-term.
  • If it feels tight after missing a few nights, wear it more and call us if it no longer fits.

Cleaning removable retainers

  • Rinse after removing and brush gently with cool water and mild soap. Avoid hot water and toothpaste that can scratch.
  • Keep it in its case when not in your mouth. Keep it away from pets, who often chew them.

Bonded (fixed) retainers

  • Clean around the wire daily with floss threaders or an interdental brush.

Call our office right away if

  • The retainer is lost, cracked or no longer fits
  • A bonded retainer wire is loose or broken

Common questions

How long do I have to wear a retainer?

Teeth can shift throughout life, so many orthodontists recommend wearing a retainer at night long-term. Follow your own provider's schedule.

What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?

Teeth can gradually move back toward their old positions. If your retainer feels tight or does not fit, contact your dentist or orthodontist promptly.
