Whitening is safe for most people when done as directed. Teeth can be more prone to staining and sensitivity for a short time afterwards.
First 48 hours
- Limit dark or strongly coloured foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, cola, berries, soy sauce and curry. Rinse with water after if you have them.
- Avoid tobacco, which stains teeth quickly.
Sensitivity
- Temporary sensitivity or tingling is common and usually goes away within a few days.
- A sensitive-teeth toothpaste can help. If you use take-home trays, you can skip a day or shorten wear time if sensitivity is bothersome.
Take-home trays
- Use only the amount of gel and wear time your dentist recommended. More is not better and can irritate gums.
- Wipe away any gel that gets on your gums.
Good to know
- Crowns, fillings and veneers do not whiten. They may need replacing to match.
- Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
